Inauguration Ceremony
Captain Williamson Sangma State University was officially inaugurated on 13th January 2025 at its permanent campus in Balalgre, South West Garo Hills. The event marked a significant milestone in the growth of higher education in Meghalaya.
The inauguration was led by the Honourable Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Shri Conrad K. Sangma, who described the occasion as a "red-letter day" for the state. He emphasised that the university was a tribute to the legacy of Captain Williamson A. Sangma and a step towards increasing access to higher education, particularly in the Garo Hills region. The Chief Minister also announced plans to establish an additional campus in Shillong and noted that colleges affiliated with the new state university would not require students to take the CUET, unlike those under NEHU.
Also present were Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Shri Thomas A. Sangma; Deputy Chief Minister, Shri Sniawbhalang Dhar; Education Minister, Shri Rakkam A. Sangma; Power Minister, Shri Abu Taher Mondal; Deputy Speaker, Shri Timothy D. Shira; and other Members of the Legislative Assembly. Senior officials from the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council and Vice-Chancellor Prof. Vasanthi Vijayakumar also attended the ceremony.
Originally planned in 2011 as a technical university, the institution’s scope was broadened in 2022 to affiliate both technical and non-technical colleges. The initial campus infrastructure, which was inaugurated in January 2023 by the Chief Minister was developed at a cost of ₹16.96 crore..
In her address, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Vasanthi Vijayakumar emphasised the university’s focus on academic excellence, research, and student development. She highlighted plans to build a knowledge-driven academic environment, support faculty development, and foster innovation across disciplines.
