Welcome to Captain Williamson Sangma State University
Captain Williamson Sangma State University is the first state university of Meghalaya, established with the goal of expanding access to quality higher education and fostering research, innovation, and regional development. Located in Balalgre, Tura, in the West Garo Hills district, the university serves as a vital academic hub for students across the Garo Hills and the wider region. With a growing number of departments and academic programmes, the university is committed to nurturing critical thinking, cultural understanding, and academic excellence.
The university is named in honour of Captain Williamson A. Sangma, the first Chief Minister of Meghalaya and a key architect in the formation of the state. A visionary leader and strong advocate for the rights of tribal communities, Captain Sangma dedicated his life to social justice, political empowerment, and the upliftment of the people of Northeast India. His legacy continues to inspire the university’s mission to empower future generations through education and inclusive development.
