Khasi is a language spoken by the people residing in Meghalaya, especially the Khasi Hills, Jaiñtia Hills and in the neighbouring borders of Assam and Bangladesh. Khasi literature has a rich oral tradition with roots in pre-literate times featuring myths, legends and folktales passed down through generations. The written form of the language emerged with the arrival of Christian missionaries, where Rev. Thomas Jones established a written script and came to be known as “U Kpa ki Dak Thoh Khasi.”
The Department of Khasi is committed to the study, preservation, and promotion of the Khasi language, literature, and culture. The Department branches its study into Khasi Linguistics, Khasi Literary Theory and Literary Criticism, Culture in Khasi Literature, Literature in Khasi Translation, and Environmental Awareness in Khasi Literature.
The Department aims to provide quality education and uplift knowledge in the field of language learning as well as preserving the rich cultural heritage and literature of the Khasis. It seeks to encourage various thrust areas of research in order to fill the need for study materials for different courses offered by the Department.
